Field Trip to Ivanpah Solar Plant

We recently went on a field trip to the Ivanpah Solar Power Plant near Las Vegas to visit their facility.

Event information

We are doing a field trip to the Ivanpah Solar Power Plant near Las Vegas on Thursday March 17th. We’ll then get a tour of the Ivanpah facilities.

It’s a 392 MW heliostat plant, making it the largest solar thermal power station in the world. It uses an enormous field of mirrors to focus onto a tower at the center, to boil water that runs turbines.

Details

We will be leaving from the parking lot just north of Beckman Auditorium at 7:30am. We will return to Caltech late the same evening.

The drive to Ivanpah should take 3-4 hours depending on traffic.

Drivers will be reimbursed a fixed amount that should cover the cost of gas for the round trip.

Food

Everyone should bring their own lunch and dinner. We eat our lunch during their initial presentation and take some time off before leaving to eat whatever you brought with you for dinner.
